Trump Postpones AI Executive Order

President Donald Trump called off an executive order establishing constraints on AI hours before a signing ceremony was set to begin, telling reporters and tech executives gathered at the White House that he feared the order would affect America’s competitive advantage.

“We’re leading China, we’re leading everybody, and I don’t want to do anything that’s going to get in the way of that lead,” Trump said Thursday.

A source tells Los Angeles Times reporters Collin Binkley and Matt O’Brien the order was written in cooperation with executives representing Anthropic, OpenAI and Google.

“The order would have established a framework for the government to vet the national security risks of the most advanced AI systems before their public release, according to a person familiar with the White House’s deliberations with the tech industry but not authorized to speak about them publicly,” they write.
